The design of real-time multiprecessor embedded systems is becoming increasingly difficult as both the software and hardware requirements have exploded. These requirements have grown, in part, because both civilian and military planners are assigning new and difficult applications to embedded systems. This growth in requirements forces increased system complexity. As the number of processors and their processing power increases, hardware prototyping of these systems using previous system design experience has become too costly and time consuming particularly during the system design phase. As these systems become more complex, mathematical analysis has also proven inadequate. This paper presents the methodology of rapid simulation and how it can be used with rapid prototyping to aid system design. Three examples of actual system designs that ased rapid simulation and rapid prototyping are presented.
