Proceeding from an iterative centroid formula we develop a Centroid Approximation DEfuzzification (CADE) method and the add-shift algorithm DECADE (Decreased Effort Centroid AplSroxlmation DEfuzzlflcatlon). Examinations of the approximation error using typi- cal examples as well as statistical methods show that DECADE is a'very good center of gravity (COG) estimate. Also concerning static, dynamic, and sta- tistical behavior DECADE and COG are equiva- lent. Unlike other improved defuzzification algo- rithms DECADE reduces the computational effort drastically and provides excellent hardware realiza- tion abilities making DECADE a very interesting al- ternative for the design of fuzzy controllers fbr real time problems.
