Concerns have been raised concerning the proper method of developing software using Ada. Some have raised concerns about code size because of linking unnecessary procedures and the tendency to have multiple instantiations of generic packages. Also Ada needs a way of developing “large grained” components or subsystems. This abstract presents an approach to Ada components which addresses these concerns.A typical approach to building an Ada component is to write something like: with A_Package; package X_Package is … end X_Package; with B_Package; package body X_Package is … end X_Package;The person(s) writing X_Package, must not only know what resources are needed for this package, but must also be aware of the overall design of the software project. They must know which packages export needed resources, and they must know the exact names of the resources within the package. This makes writing reusable software very difficult. Also X_Package can not be tested without some implementation of A_Package and B_Package.To enhance reuse, some build packages like the following: with A_Package generic type B_Type is …; package X_Package is … end X_Package; with Generic_C_Package; package body X_Package is package B_Package is new Generic_C_Package( B_Type ); … end X_Package;This has limited reusability. However since several packages may need the equivalent of B_Package, there is a tendency for multiple instantiations. To avoid this, many would make one instantiation which all may import. This becomes the previous situation. In any case, it is true that the writers of X_Package must know the names of resources exported by Generic_C_Package in addition to knowing what resources they need.The proposed method of building Ada reusable packages is to have no unit other than the main procedure import any packages. Instead, such units will import all needed resources via generic parameters. generic type A_Type is …; type B_Type is …; with function B_Function( X : in A_Type ) return B_Type; with procedure C_Proc( X : in out B_Type ); … package X_Package is … end X_Package; package body X_Package is … end X_Package;The above can be used in many settings. Instantiation of the package, not its internal code establishes bindings of identifiers to resources which are provided elsewhere. The main procedure has the responsibility of instantiating the unit with the proper resources. Several Ada packages are being written in this way so that comparisons to the other approaches may be made.
