The use of artificial intelligence in language tutoring systems is in its present state largely based on syntax and semantics processing. In the work reported here, an attempt has been made to use animated graphics in such systems. Such an extended system uses a combination of objects and motions in a manner resembling the primitives in Schank's conceptual system. Graphics primitives are used to define these primitive objects and motions and they are tied to the underlying linguistic system. Alternatively, the syntax and semantics rules of the language are linked to a graphics kernel that consists of graphics primitives. The tutoring consists of two layers. The first is an instructional layer that uses the rules of syntax and semantics of the language and uses the associated primitives in the graphics kernel in the instruction. The second is a semantic analyzer used for the identification and correction of student responses. The latter, too, makes use of the graphics kernel in reinforcing the semantics of each segment of a lesson. A prototype is currently being designed and the results will be reported in the near future.
