A ma in tenance t e s t is a program used pe r i od i c a l l y to e n s u r e computer r e l i a b i l i t y and print informat ion regard ing mal func t ion ing e lements ; an a c c e p t a n c e t e s t is a program which i s d e v e l o p e d pr imar i ly for the i n i t i a l a c c e p t a n c e of the computer or a component of the computer . A c c e p t a n c e t e s t s for the MIDAC c o n s i s t e d of a s e r i e s of shor t programs which evo lved into some of the ma in tenance t e s t s which a re used today. C l o s e l y a s s o c i a t e d with the problem of e s t a b l i s h i n g computer re l iab i l i t y i s the problem of provid ing the eng inee r with a s much da ta a s p o s s i b l e for d e t e c t i n g mal func t ion ing e l emen t s . Se l f check ing t e c hn ique s a re employed a s much a s p o s s i b l e . New t ec hn ique s in au tomat ic error de t ec t i on a s wel l a s t e chn iques for e s t a b l i s h i n g higher computer re l iab i l i t y n e c e s s i t a t e the cons t an t r e d e s i g n of t e s t programs. F o r the p r e sen t MIDAC t e s t s , d i f ferent c r i t e r i a a re used for t e s t i n g d i f fe ren t s e c t i o n s of the computer . T h e s e c r i t e r i a may he s t a t e d a s fo l lows: 1. Seve re opera t ing cond i t ions for the computer must be produced; 2. A s u f f i c i e n t l y la rge se t of random (pseudo-random) numbers must be opera ted on, and cor rec t r e s u l t s ob ta ined; or, 3. E l e m e n t s of the computer must a s s u m e a l l p o s s i b l e s t a t e s , and be c h e c k e d for c o r r e c t n e s s . T h e f i r s t c r i t e r ion is u sed for t e s t i n g the a c o u s t i c memory and the magne t ic drum; the s e c o n d and third, for t e s t i n g the a r i thmet ic and cont ro l func t ions of the computer . T h e s e t e s t s a r e d e s c r i b e d in grea ter de t a i l in the fo l lowing s e c t i o n s of t h i s paper .
