Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK) is the premier event covering all aspects of embedded systems and software. By bringing together three leading conferences (CASES, CODES+ISSS, and EMSOFT), three symposia (ESTIMedia, IoT, and RSP), and several workshops and tutorials, ESWEEK covers the whole range of embedded system topics in research and development. ESWEEK 2015 was held in Amsterdam from Oct. 4 to 9, 2015. Four distinguished industrial and academic keynotes highlighted important trends moving or even shaking the industry, all trends enabled by embedded systems and embedded systems design. In his keynote " Enabling the Digital Transformation for a Smarter Life, " Philippe Mag-arshak, CTO, Embedded Processing Solutions of ST Microelectronics, talked about the upcoming challenges and opportunities of the Internet of Things with a strong impact on technology and market development. Manfred Morari, professor at ETH Zuerich, and one of the most prominent researchers in automated control, demonstrated the importance of embedded system performance for cyber-physical systems in the keynote " Fast Model Predictive Control. " Michael Fausten, VP, Vehicle Systems Development at Bosch, asked " Evolution or Revolution? " as he explained the requirements for the architecture of automated vehicles. Last but not least, Mark Steigemann, senior director , NXP Business Unit Automotive, addressed another hot trend in his keynote " Connected Vehicles-Cars Talking to Each Other, Safe & Securely. " The 21 regular sessions and seven special sessions of the three conferences were organized in four parallel tracks consisting of papers selected after a very competitive review process. There was a strong emphasis on interaction: at the end of each session, there was a poster presentation where all presented papers were discussed with the authors. Out of eight outstanding nominations, a best paper committee selected one best paper per conference. The authors of the eight papers nominated as Best Paper Candidates for the three ESWEEK conferences have been invited to submit extended versions of their work to this special issue. The three CASES papers address various aspects of parallel computing platforms and their efficient use in modern embedded systems.
