Background Two papers have been presented at previous SIGUCCS conferences on Ohio State’s involvement in producing a customtied client server suite of products for campus network access. The fi~ titled HomeNet Technical and Consultation Support, presented at the 1993 conference, dealt with the issues of moving from a terminal oriented service to a client-server oriented access. We discussed the move to the client-server model with several other large universities at the 1992 SIGUCCS, and found a few others who were considering a stiilar move. The second paper, presented in 1995, titled Seamlas Integration of Client-Server Applications discussed major goals and significant issues of the client-server model for campus wide network access. This paper will present the lessons learned over the past five years and what the next few years will bring. h 1992 and 1993 most PC’swere still running DOS, and 16Meg. was considered a lot of memo~. The “Perfect PC” in 1993 was a 33 = 486DX with 16 MB of RAM, a 1.44 MB floppy drive, a CD-ROM and a 15“ VGA monitor. The cost was IiWemore than pocket change -$3500. Windows 3.1 was just introduced in 1993 and only a few people were beginning to use SLF. Because there were few phone dialers that trdked to SL~ in those days, each client had to be individurdly configured. The task a typical user faced was paved with problems. Our vision at that time was to provide a set of off-theshelf clients that worked well on a number of machmes and could be cofigured with a separate install program.
