The University of Virginia’s Department of Information Technology (ITC) has taken a pro-active approach to preventing staff burnout that helps staff members to develop new skills, provides opportunities for staff to try new career paths and allows ITC to spread support for existing projects among more people. The “Staff Internship” program provides a mechanism for staff members to talk with managers about what opportunities may be available in their own or other areas and then to write a formal proposal for an internship that will last six months. This paperpresents the origins of this project, how it has been received and implemented, reactions of participants and managers, andfuture directions it may take.
