Organizing an information technology service unit by type of platform (e.g. Unix, DOS, . . .), or byfunctional area (e.g. Office Systems, Applications, . . .) provides a relatively clear organizationalframeworkfor the people within the unit. 7’he opposite is often the case for our clients, however, as people are very much task oriented, and seek advice or assistance at that level. To be effective, and truly helpful, we must present a framework to our clients which appears to group services, and resources to support them, according to a limited number of primary task or activity types. This does not necessarily mean we must actually organize ourselves in task-oriented groups, although this might be fictive with suficient staffing and other resources. In effect, we rrzust strive to present a logical view of our organization which is more attuned to the needs and expectations of the people who seek our services. How we are actually organized in terms of our organizational chart and reporting structure should not matter In a sense, this is sort of like the relational database management system model. The interface is user or task-oriented, and is largely independent qf how the data is organized behind the scenes. This presentation will discuss major task areas and services provided at Queen‘s and ozdtline organizational strategies to deliver these services,
