An acceptable use policy was developed by Information Systems & Technology at the University of California at Berkeley and approved by the Campus Computing and Communications Policy Board in the fall of 1992. The process included examination of issues associated with shared systems, facilities use, attachments to the Campus network, bulletin board services, and softzuare licensing/copyright. Development of the policy included the requirement that organizational guidelines be developed to govern IST employees‘ conduct in carrying out any investigations of perceived misuse, as zuell as guidelines for mforcemen t. At the same time this policy was being established, UCLink, a campus-wide free electronic mail service offering access to networked information resources, zoas under pilot testing. Expanded student involvement resulted in a wide range of tests for implementation of the Computer Use Policy. The experience of examining appropriate use during the pilot influenced the development of UCLink.

Developing a computer use policy at the University of California at Berkeley
