As the trend continues to change from the majority of work being accomplished on our mainframe system to work being accomplished on networked user workstations, JMU’S computing support team was losing the battle to keep up with the installations of Internet tools and the continued updates of these tools. We realized that we were not staffed properly to visit each user workstation to install and configure these applications. Additionally, the users did not want to, or in some cases, did not have the necessary training and background to follow seemingly long and complicated sets of instructions to accomplish these installation tasks. As we completed our goal of networking every faculty and staff workstation on campus and fine-tuned consistent volume naming schemes and directory structures of our file servers, an automated approach to installing and updating workstation applications became not only a possibility, but a reality.
