Feature A~icles Chuck Huff SL Olaf College m(y stolay edu It is often easy to peruse the journals or ask a question on the net and find at least one perspective on a computers and society issue. But getting beyond this can be difficult. Finding multiple perspectives on any issue, each well argued, can be a daunting task for even someone steeped in the literature. This is precisely what we hope to provide with the new 'feature article" section. Each target article will represent a position that is well known. !t willprovide, in a short, informal style, an argument for the position and some central references. Each of the responses will provide arguments against that position, or for an alternative position. The emphasis here is on the exchange of ideas. The positions taken by individual may not represent their opinion, but this section allows them to provide the best argument they can for a position and then see the responses to those arguments. In this issue, Larry Rosen and Michelle Weil present the case for "technophobia. " This is a popular, personality-based approach to understanding the stresses our increasingly technical society places on individuals. Our respondents suggest that, though the approach may make some useful contributions to helping individuals accommodate to technological demands, it provides only a part of the story, and taken alone may even provide a misleading story. 7he next issue will contain a target article by Deborah Johnson on the qualifications and approach needed for a successful "Computer Ethics" course. A decade ago, with our colleague Deborah Sears, we were intrigued by the fact that our students did not seem to embrace the personal computer as a tool for helping them perform statistical calculations.
