Most advocates of high-level languages (HLLs) would contend that one major advantage of a HLL is its machine independence. A 'C' or Pascal or Aria program which makes no special demand of system services and which compiles and runs on a VAX should compile and run on a SPARC or a SNAKE or even on a Macintosh or a PC. If the language fails to meet that standard in some way, it seems most reasonable to modify the language to meet that expectation of portability. We have found a simple and reasonable statement in 'C' which fails that test. We propose a new definition for the operation which, while not entirely satisfying in its consistency, is completely portable. The 'C' language provides the ability to convert or cast from one data type to another without loss of information, provided only that the data can be represented by the target data type; likewise, the casting of pointers from one data type to another is also supported. However, the type casting of pointers proves to be architecture dependent and may yield differing results or even illegal memory accesses when executed across different platforms. This paper presents an example of this problem and proposes two definitions which are at least portable if not entirely unambiguous.
