We develop an algorithm for adaptive integration over a triangularized region, as a prototype of task partitioning on local memory MIMD systems. The construction of a suitable strategy for dynamic load balancing is emphasized. The resulting load brdancing scheme uses a central mediator approach, where the mediator manages the flow of work but tasks are passed dmectly from overloaded to underloaded nodes. 13ming results are given to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm. Other task partitioning problems to which the approach is applicable include adaptive mesh refinement, image rendering, N-body problems, stochastic search and branch and bound algorithms, where tasks generally involve partitioning of the associated problem space.
