For a number of years it has been suggested that one of the fruitful areas of application for hybrid computation might lie in the study of distributed parameter systems. In principle, the combination of analog computer speed with the memory and logical capabilities of digital machines should make it possible to solve partial differential equations both efficiently and rapidly. However, most of the published work in the field has dealt only with linear problems in one spatial dimension and time, where the advantages and limitations of the particular methods do not stand out clearly.
