problem of finding the proper location in a program for reclaiming allocated memory. Several approaches are possible [6]. A general technique used by most object-oriented languages is the automatic garbage collection. The compiler and the run time system of the language handle the detection of unaccessible objects, and reclamation of their memory spaces. It relieves the programmers from the burden of memory management. However, the advantage has its price - a potential run time overhead. This solution is adopted by Simula [4], Smalltalk [3], Actor [i] and Eiffel [5]. C++ does not support automatic garbage collection [6]. Memory management is handled by programmer-controlled deallocation. The new operator allocates storage space from the free store, and the delete operator releases the space. However, delete cannot deallocate the internal structures of a class object. This is compensated by a storage management at the class level. It can be considered as an intermediate layer situated between the automatic garbage collection and the programmer-controlled deallocation. C++ allows a class to maintain its own memory management without explicit request for allocation and deallocation from a user. The point is that a class has the total control over its internal structures, and is thus in a better position to handle the storage management for all its objects. This article summarizes some potential problems on this level of memory management.
