Loyola College is a small, four-year , liberal arts college with a 6-year youn g computer science department. The CS1 an d CS2 courses serve prospective CS major s and mathematics majors, many of whom choose to minor in CS. The programmin g language for these courses is Pascal. Th e second course stresses algorithm design , elementary algorithm analysis, "good " programming practice, elementary abstrac t data types, and mathematical applications. The course is intended to expose student s to the power of computing and the beaut y of the discipline, as well as afford the m the pleasure of building good program s that work well. With such demandin g goals, the pace of lectures an d coordinated programming projects is fast. Typically, CS2 requires the completion o f 6 major programming assignments-eac h requiring 200-500 lines of code. Frequently, projects simulate lif e situations, e .g ., queuing patterns at a grocery store. We have also found i t helpful to choose projects that serv e double-duty, as it were, by exposin g students to concepts they will encounte r in later CS courses. Informal feedbac k from students indicates that suc h projects, while not, in general, a s popular as those that are more "real-life-oriented," but do spur interest. Students, who successfully complete th e course, frequently comment that the CS-related projects increased their comfor t with concepts introduced in later courses. This paper attempts to describe severa l such projects that have been successfull y used and also to point out other area s that may be tapped for such projects. The projects are listed according t o the computer science area with which the y are related. They appear in roughly th e order in which they are assigned in th e course. The first unit in the course treat s file processing : Pascal file types, use o f the file buffer, text files, strin g manipulation, and the standard Pascal I/ O procedures. These topics afford a n opportunity for students to dealwithissue s that they will encounter in more depth i n a software engineering course.
