In this paper, we present a methodology, for the creation of conferencing services for the Next Generation Network (NGN). We adopt a top-down design approach using a set of application design requirements and design goals to make design decisions. The service creation process within this methodology consists of first conceptualising a service in a generic network independent service description, then taking this service description and identifying suitable network protocols which follow our design requirements, creating an abstract class diagram, and finally identifying a suitable technology to implement the service. To demonstrate our methodology we will design a simple multi-party conferencing service. From this we will identify Java as a potentially catalytic technology in the development and execution of applications and services for the NGN and suggest that the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the most appropriate internet signalling protocol to support conferencing services. This methodology as been derived as a result of work currently being carried out on an applied research project in ITB which is concerned with the development of a real-time collaboration service which allows multiple distributed scientists to graphically analyse a common set of data obtained from mobile sensors in a virtual conference environment.
