Minotaur 1 personified all the standard cliches of the "evil" robot having human-like intelligence, incredible sensory capacity, and laser-rays of destruction. It trundled around saying things like "That does not corr~pute," in an irritatingly high-pitched voice, 2 got completely out of control when it detected an "intruder", and finally had its speech grind down to a halt in the now classic "HAL mode of failure" after it was subdued by our hero. In retrospect, the robot designer has to ask, "why in the universe would anyone ever intentionally design a robot to be so slow, given the capability to make it so superlative along almost every other dimension?" Indeed, the Minotaur's only defect as a weapon seemed to be its speed of locomotion, a comparatively trivial problem. Oh well, it's going to be difficu]t for anybody to build a credible robot (one that gains acceptance) that doesn't also satisfy the public's preconceptions (as dictated by artistic license) about what an "authentic" robot is supposed to be able to do and not do. From the editors' preface: "Computational Semantics is not so much a new subject, as a new way of looking at old questions-those concerning meaning, language, and understanding. It is based on the assumption that a good way to explicate such difficult notions is to work toward the programming of an automaton, or digital computer, so that it could be said to understand language. "The questions can be raised as to whether Computational Semantics will lead to a better understanding, or, on the contrary, will the more traditional methods of philosophy, logic, linguistics, and psychology uncover whatever there is to be known about the dark, though familiar regions of meaning, language, and understanding. The existence of this book makes clear that we do not see the latter as the case, but rather think that Computational Semantics is the best way we have of solving the difficult problem of language comprehension. "This explains one feature of this text book which might otherwise strike the reader as odd-this is a text w{th a strong point of view. So, although the rudiments of the more established disciplines listed above are introduced here, they are all presented from what might be called an "artificial intelligence point of view".
