Theoretical analyses of the random energy model with only two states and itsextension with a hierarchy of only two levels show that these models reproduceout-of-equilibrium phenomena observed in experiments of glassy materials; therejuvenation effect (the chaos effect), i.e. the abrupt jump and subsequentrelaxation of the out-of-phase susceptibility as if the system rejuvenates whenthe temperature is lowered, and the power-law relaxation of the two-timecorrelation function. Our results suggest that also in an assembly of smallsystems with relaxation times distributed broadly some of these interestingout-of-equilibrium phenomena can be observed.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J.Phys.
