Techniques such as detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and its extensionshave been widely used to determine the nature of scaling in nucleotidesequences. In this brief communication we show that tandem repeats which areubiquitous in nucleotide sequences can prevent reliable estimation of possiblelong-range correlations.
