Theantilipoidal antibodies produced intheearly period ofsyphilitic infection arefoundinthe19S fraction, andthereafter agradual shift takes place to the7S fraction (Tsunoda, 1966;Aho,1967). In primary andsecondary syphilis, fluorescent treponemalantibody absorption (FTA-ABS)antibodies havealready beenprovedtobebothIgGandIgM (AtwoodandMiller, 1969). The experiments of Tomizawa andKasamatsu (1966) inwhicherythrocytes sensitized withTreponema pallidum wereused inhaemagglutination assays attracted ourinterest. Thepresent paperdeals withthedevelopment of Treponema pallidum haemagglutination (TPHA) antibodies inserafromrabbits withexperimental T. pallidum infection ofvarious durations, employing density gradient ultracentrifugation andgel-filtration methodstoseparate theantibody-containing fractions.
