W. screens, as the ra'dium salts themselves, or dissolved 'in distilled water or a weak saline solution, and administered by drinkinig or injection. Emanation applicators are often of the greatest value in the treatment of malignant growths, as in them it is possible to concentrate the activity per unit area to a very higlh degree. For examnple, the 100 mg. tubes of radium sulplhate used in tlle Institute measuLre 4cm. in length by 0.2cmI. in diameter. It is quite easy to make an emanation tube of equtal activity measuring only 0.6 cm. in lengtlh by 0.13 cm. in diameter. Such a tube can be enclosed in an iridium -pointed platinum needle with walls of 0.3 mm. in tlhickness, tlius forming a very smnall but extremely powerful apparatus for the treatment of nodules in tongue, palate. breast, or otlher organs. Radium emanation falls to half-strenotlh in 3.85 days, losing16 per cent. of its initial activity during the first twenty-four hcours. Thle duration of an exposure rarely exceeds twenty-four hoturs, and if it be decided to give a treatment for that time with a-radium emanation applicator of, say,-100mfig. strengtth, the apparattus leaves the laboratory witlh an initial activity of 109 to 1O0mg. At the end of twentyfourlhours its activity will have fallen to 92 to 93mg., so tlhat its mean activity througliotut that period will have been approximately that of 100mg.
