Brink and Folkers (1949) have identified 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole as an acid degradation product of vitamin B12. The benzimidazole and 1 ,2-dimethyl,4, 5-diaminobenzene have been shown to possess vitamin B12 activity for the rat by Emerson et al. (1950). Recently, Woolley (1950, 1951) has presented evidence to indicate that the dimethyldiamine is a precursor in the microbial synthesis of vitamin B12. The benzimidazole and the dimethyldiamine, both of which can be considered chemical precursors of vitamin B12, were devoid of biological activity for Lactobacillus lactis Dorner. On the contrary, these compounds were found to possess inhibitory properties for the vitamin Big-requiring organisms, Lactobacillu8 lactis, Lactobacillus leichmannii, and Euglena gracilis. This paper presents data obtained on the inhibitory nature of these compounds as well as other substituted benzimidazoles and their relation to vitamin B12 requirement.
