Since extensive investigations of the inorganic fluorides have disclosed their marked toxicity, the scarcity of work on the fluorinated organic compounds of possible therapeutic value is perhaps understandable. Practically no pharmacological studies on organic fluorine compounds were made prior to 1928. A survey of the literature accumulating since that time (Lehmann (1928), Lang (1930), Yant (1933), Purjesz et al. (1934), Phillips and Hart (1935), Litzka (1936), Brenner (1936), Kraft (1937), Kempf et al. (1937)) indicates that a few classes of the organic fluorides have been investigated. One is impressed with the fact that the organic compounds are not nearly so toxic as the inorganic fluorides and thus they might well be adapted as antiseptics for topical or even internal use. Moissan (1886) reported antiseptic properties for ethyl fluoride and Chabri6 (1890) found methyl fluoride to have bactericidal activity. Bactericidal studies by Thimm (1897) with p ,p'difluorodiphenyl in vitro indicated that concentrations as high as 1:20 did not kill Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio comma, Corynebacterium diphtheriae or Bacillus anthracis.
