Based on the observation that cells ofClostridium acetobutylicum unable to store granulose do not initiate sporulation, a staining procedure was developed for the detection of asporogenous mutants. By application of this procedure it was shown that an asporogenous strain ofC. acetobutylicum was selected in continuous culture under phosphate limitation.
