Aminoglycosides are among the most commonly used broad-spectrum antibiotics in the anti-infective armamentar- ium. The vast majority of aminoglycosides are bactericidal, they have predictable pharmacokinetics, and they often act in syn- ergy with other antibiotics, properties that make them valuable as anti-infectives. Furthermore, despite the potential for renal toxicity, ototoxicity, and bacterial resistance, several members of this family of antibiotics have enjoyed clinical use for several decades.
