Polarization is one of the basic properties of electromagnetic wavesconveying valuable information in signal transmission and sensitivemeasurements. Conventional methods for advanced polarization control imposedemanding requirements on material properties and attain only limitedperformance. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin, broadband, and highly efficientmetamaterial-based terahertz polarization converters that are capable ofrotating a linear polarization state into its orthogonal one. Based on theseresults we create metamaterial structures capable of realizing near-perfectanomalous refraction. Our work opens new opportunities for creating highperformance photonic devices and enables emergent metamaterial functionalitiesfor applications in the technologically difficult terahertz frequency regime.
