This study investigated listeners’ adaptation to a new accent within a portion of the vowel space of their native language. Previous work has shown that such adaptation requires only brief exposure [Maye et al., ‘‘In search of the weckud wetch: Online adaptation to speaker accent,’’ CUNY Conference on Sentence Processing, Cambridge, MA (2003); Clarke & Garrett, ‘‘Rapid adaptation to foreign‐accented English,’’ J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 116, 3647–3658 (2004)]. However, neither adaptation involved visual referents and the postadaptation assessment involved either a lexical decision task or a cross‐modal lexical matching task. In the present study, English‐speaking listeners were exposed to a list of lexical items in which front vowels were lowered (e.g., ‘‘witch’’ became ‘‘wetch’’) but back vowels were not (e.g., moon).
