A List–Viterbi detec-tor structure is proposed that incorporates the noise predictionwith periodic state-metric updates based on outer error detec-tion codes (EDCs). More specically, a periodic decision ma k-ing process is utilized for a non-overlapping sliding windows ofP bits based on the use of outer EDCs. In a number of mag-netic recording applications, Error Correction Coding (ECC) isadversely effected by the presence of long and dominant errorevents. Unlike the conventional post processing methods thatare usually tailored to a specic set of dominant error event sor the joint modulation code trellis architectures that are oper-ating on larger state spaces at the expense of increased imple-mentation complexity, the proposed detector does not use any apriori information about the error event distributions and oper-ates at reduced state trellis. We present pre-ECC bit error rateperformance as well as the post-ECC codeword failure rates ofthe proposed detector using perfect detection scenario as well aspractical detection codes as the EDCs are not essential to theoverall design. Furthermore, it is observed that proposed algo-rithm does not introduce new error events. Simulation resultsshow that the proposed algorithm gives improved bit error andpost-ECC codeword failure rates at the expense of some increasein complexity.
