Geodiversity plays a key role in supporting life and is, along with biodiversity, the concept of natural diversity. In general, however, citizens’ perceptions of their surroundings are deficient in terms of the abiotic elements of nature, making many of them poorly valued in nature conservation policies. This paper analyzes exploratory data on the perception of geodiversity by the population of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (RMSP) and discusses the importance of strategic communication actions for the dissemination of geoscientific knowledge and the promotion of geoconservation. A questionnaire was applied to 100 inhabitants of the RMSP, consisting of open and closed questions, through face-to-face interviews (68 individuals) and online form (32 individuals). The vast majority (77%) of respondents use the internet to obtain science knowledge and among the 95% who have some level of interest in science, geology is among the least interesting (20%) unlike the environment (44%). About 30% cited correct rock examples, but most cited chemical elements (iron, zinc, among others) as examples of minerals and only 3% satisfactorily understand the origin of the soil. Tourism is the main reason for the visits to the places of geological interest addressed in the questionnaire (63%) and 96.9% of respondents believe that these sites need to be conserved for their cultural and historical importance, collective belonging. The results suggest that although there is a lack of knowledge, there is great interest in geosciences as 75% of respondents would like to know more about the subject. There was concern about the conservation of abiotic elements of nature, although the term geoconservation needs further conceptual understanding. There is a need for strategic communication actions in order to provide the citizen with minimal knowledge to enable them to form opinions and make informed decisions about conservation exploration actions, appropriately modulating their behavior in terms of resource consumption. and enjoy geodiversity and geological heritage.
