The paper elaborates the methodical side of empirical researchof factors infl uencing the economic success of companies. Theanalysis is based on the selective sample of more than 400stock listed (share holding) companies and limited partnershipslocated in the Czech Republic. The main goal of the research isto verify, methodically and theoretically, the hypothesis thatthere is signifi cant mutual dependency between certain typesof economic success of companies and a certain typical configuration of values of selected characteristics which describethese companies. The paper concentrates on an analysis ofapplying the statistical pattern recognition methodology in thecourse of verifying this hypothesis. Our analysis confi rms thepotential gains connected with the method. Within the sample weidentifi ed group of potential factors of competitiveness whichcan characterize the interdependence between competitivenessand economic performance.
