This paper addresses the analysis and design of non-reciprocal filters basedon time modulated resonators. We analytically show that time modulating aresonator leads to a set of harmonic resonators composed of the unmodulatedlumped elements plus a frequency invariant element that accounts fordifferences in the resonant frequencies. We then demonstrate that harmonicresonators of different order are coupled through non-reciprocal admittanceinverters whereas harmonic resonators of the same order couple with theadmittance inverter coming from the unmodulated filter network. This couplingtopology provides useful insights to understand and quickly designnon-reciprocal filters and permits their characterization using anasynchronously tuned coupled resonators network together with the couplingmatrix formalism. Two designed filters, of orders three and four, areexperimentally demonstrated using quarter wavelength resonators implemented inmicrostrip technology and terminated by a varactor on one side. The varactorsare biased using coplanar waveguides integrated in the ground plane of thedevice. Measured results are found to be in good agreement with numericalresults, validating the proposed theory.
