The preservation of sidelobe performance from a phased array with failed elements is addressed. Channel failures are represented by an additive perturbation to the normal data vector. Equivalently, for linear beamforming. an additive perturbation to the weighted steer vector suffices; the resulting array factor similarly contains a normal response plus a perturbation term. l h s formulation not only models an array with missing elements, but can represent several compensation techniques for the failed elements. The performance of compensation schemes is demonstrated by simulation, and techniques for (a) preserving good sidelobe. response in a nominated region or (b) mapping the region of worst degradation into invisible space are identified.
