The title complex, [Cu(C 13 H 10 ClN 2 O)(H 2 O)]NO 3 ·H 2 O, was obtained by the reaction of 5-chloro­salicyl­aldehyde, 2-(amino­meth­yl)pyridine and copper nitrate in methanol. The first reported polymorph of this complex was triclinic [Liang  et al.  (2010  ▶ ).  Acta Cryst.  E 66 , m40]. The present polymorph crystallized in the monoclinic space group  P 2 1 / c . The Cu II  ion is in a square planar environment and is coordinated by one phenolate O, one imine N and one pyridine N atom of the tridentate Schiff base ligand and by one water O atom. In the crystal, mol­ecules are linked through inter­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds to form chains along the  a  axis.
