The structure of In 0.51 Fe 0.49 LiP 2 O 7  consists of a three-dimensional network constructed from (In III /Fe III )O 6  octa­hedra and P 2 O 7  groups. Each  MIII O 6  octa­hedron is linked to six PO 4  tetra­hedra belonging to five different P 2 O 7  groups and shares two corners with the same P 2 O 7  group so as to build infinite chains or rather parallel colums of [ MIII P 2 O 11 ] running along the  a  axis. The linkage between these chains or columns defines hepta­gonal tunnels parallel to [100] in which the Li +  ions are located in off-centred positions. The In 0.51 Fe 0.49 LiP 2 O 7  compound can be regarded as one composition of the continuous solid solution between LiFeP 2 O 7  and LiInP 2 O 7  whose structure is isotypic with the  AI FeP 2 O 7  ( AI  = Na, K, Rb, Cs and Ag) diphosphate family.
