The title compound, C 15 H 16 ClNO 3 S, was obtained by the organocatalytic asymmetric Michael addition of thian-4-one to 1-chloro-4-[(1 E ,3 E )-4-nitro­buta-1,3-dien­yl]benzene. The double bond has an  E  configuration and the thian-4-one six-membered ring adopts a chair conformation. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.
