We report on the first spectroscopy study of the very neutron-rich nucleus3612Mg24using the direct two-proton knockout reaction9Be38Si;36MgXat83 MeV=nucleon. The energy of the first excited2state of36Mg,E216606keV, was measured. The magnitude of the partial cross sections to theground state and the21state is indicative of strong intruder admixtures in the lowest-lying states assuggested by Monte Carlo shell-model calculations.status: publishe
