The influence of depolarizing field on the magnitude and stability of auniform polarization in ferroelectric capacitors and tunnel junctions isstudied using a nonlinear thermodynamic theory. It is predicted that, inheterostructures involving strained epitaxial films and metal electrodes, thehomogeneous polarization state may remain stable against transformations intothe paraelectric phase and into polydomain states down to the nanoscale. Thisresult supports the possibility of depolarizing-field-related resistiveswitching in ferroelectric tunnel junctions with dissimilar electrodes. Theresistance on/off ratio in such junctions is shown to be governed by thedifference between the reciprocal capacitances of screening space charges inthe electrodes.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, changed conten
