The existence of drag reduction by polymer additives, well established forwall-bounded turbulent flows, is controversial in homogeneous, isotropicturbulence. To settle this controversy we carry out a high-resolution directnumerical simulation (DNS) of decaying, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence withpolymer additives. Our study reveals clear manifestations ofdrag-reduction-type phenomena: On the addition of polymers to the turbulentfluid we obtain a reduction in the energy dissipation rate, a significantmodification of the fluid energy spectrum especially in the deep-dissipationrange, a suppression of small-scale intermittency, and a decrease insmall-scale vorticity filaments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
