An efficient and intuitive framework for universal quantum computation ispresented that uses pairs of spin-1/2 particles to form logical qubits and asingle physical interaction, Heisenberg exchange, to produce all gateoperations. Only two Heisenberg gate operations are required to produce acontrolled pi-phase shift, compared to 19 for exchange-only proposals employingthree spins. Evolved from well-studied decoherence-free subspaces, thisarchitecture inherits immunity from collective decoherence mechanisms. Thesimplicity and adaptability of this approach should make it attractive forspin-based quantum computing architectures.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in PR
