We report the first direct observation of Brillouin-like propagation modes ina dissipative periodic optical lattice. This has been done by observing, inboth theoretical and experimental work, a resonant behaviour of the spatialdiffusion coefficient in the direction corresponding to the propagation modewith the phase velocity of the moving intensity modulation used to excite thesepropagation modes. Furthermore, we show theoretically that the amplitude of theBrillouin mode is a nonmonotonic function of the strength of the noisecorresponding to the optical pumping, and discuss this behaviour in terms ofnonconventional stochastic resonance.Comment: Phys.
