The charged-particle pseudorapidity density dNch/deta has been measured forAu+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN)=130 GeV at RHIC, using the PHOBOS apparatus. Thetotal number of charged particles produced for the 3% most central Au+Aucollisions for |eta|<=5.4 is found to be 4200+-470. The evolution of dNch/detawith centrality is discussed, and compared to model calculations and to datafrom proton-induced collisions. The data show an enhancement incharged-particle production at mid-rapidity, while in the fragmentationregions, the results are consistent with expectations from pp and pAscattering.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
