Noncanonical variables are used to construct a Hamiltonian for guiding-center motion in a nonuniform magnetostatic field. Lie methods are then used to obtain the ponderomotive (quasistatic) Hamiltonian for the perturbation by a wave of arbitrary polarization and wavenumber, with spatially modulated amplitude and wavevector. The result is applied to the problem of r.f. stoppering in mirror confinement.
