A time-resolved spectroscopic protocol exploiting terahertz-assistedphotoionization is proposed to reconstruct transient density matrix. Populationand coherence elements are effectively mapped onto spectrally separated peaksin photoionization spectra. The beatings of coherence dynamics can betemporally resolved beyond the pulse duration, and the relative phase betweeninvolved states is directly readable from the oscillatory spectraldistribution. As demonstrated by a photo-excited multilevel open quantumsystem, the method shows potential applications for sub-femtosecondtime-resolved measurements of coherent dynamics with free electron lasers andtabletop laser fields.
