Quantum spin ice materials, pyrochlore magnets with competing Ising andtransverse exchange interactions, have been widely discussed as candidates fora quantum spin-liquid ground state. Here, motivated by quantum chemicalcalculations for Pr pyrochlores, we present the results of a study forfrustrated transverse exchange. Using a combination of variationalcalculations, exact diagonalisation, numerical linked-cluster and seriesexpansions, we find that the previously-studied U(1) quantum spin liquid, inits pi-flux phase, transforms into a nematic quantum spin liquid at ahigh-symmetry, SU(2) point.
