First principle gyrokinetic simulation of the edge turbulent transport intoroidal plasmas finds a reverse trend in the turbulent transport coefficientsunder strong gradients. It is found that there exist both linear and nonlinearcritical gradients for the nonmonotonicity of transport characteristics. Thediscontinuity of transport flux slope around the turning gradient showsfeatures of second order phase transition. Under strong gradient the mostunstable modes are in non-ground eigenstates with unconventional modestructures, which significantly reduces the effective correlation length andthus reverse the transport trend. Our results suggest a completely newmechanism for the low to high confinement mode transition without invokingshear flow or zonal flow.
