We present a scheme designed to suppress the dominant source of infidelity inentangling gates between quantum systems coupled through intermediate bosonicoscillator modes. Such systems are particularly susceptible to residualqubit-oscillator entanglement at the conclusion of a gate period which reducesthe fidelity of the target entangling operation. We demonstrate how theexclusive use of discrete phase shifts in the field moderating thequbit-oscillator interaction - easily implemented with modern synthesizers - issufficient to both ensure multiple oscillator modes are decoupled and tosuppress the effects of fluctuations in the driving field. This approach isamenable to a wide variety of technical implementations including geometricphase gates in superconducting qubits and the Molmer-Sorensen gate for trappedions. We present detailed example protocols tailored to trapped-ion experimentsand demonstrate that our approach allows multiqubit gate implementation with asignificant reduction in technical complexity relative to previouslydemonstrated protocols.
