We propose to control the retinal photoisomerization yield through theback-action dynamics imparted by a nonselective optical measurement of themolecular electronic state. This incoherent effect is easier to implement thancomparable coherent pulse shaping techniques, and is also robust toenvironmental noise. A numerical simulation of the quantum dynamics shows thatthe isomerization yield of this important biomolecule can be substantiallyincreased above the natural limit.
