Vibrational nonequilibrium effects in charge transport throughsingle-molecule junctions are investigated. Focusing on molecular bridges withmultiple electronic states, it is shown that electronic-vibrational couplingtriggers a variety of vibronic emission and absorption processes, whichinfluence the conductance properties and mechanical stability ofsingle-molecule junctions profoundly. Employing a master equation and anonequilibrium Green's function approach, these processes are analyzed indetail for a generic model of a molecular junction and forbenzenedibutanethiolate bound to gold electrodes.
